1851 – November 22, Nancy BRAZELL, age 67, resident of JoDaviess County applied for bounty land on the basis of Valentine BRAZELL, deceased, who was a private in the Mounted Rangers Company commanded by Captain Jacob SHORT in the War of 1812 for a year beginning about June 1813 and again volunteered continuing in actual service for two years six months. She stated she had married Valentine BRAZELL in Fayette County in April 1824 by Henry WALKER, a Justice of Peace, and her name before said marriage was Nancy JURNEY, and her husband died at Rush Creek, JoDaviess County on November 27, 1848. Application was made in Carroll County, Illinois. It was rejected. (Bounty land file received from National Archives)

1856 – Approximate year. Nancy BRASWELL died at age 72. (Leona Soladay could not read the date of death on her stone but in 1851 Nancy declared on her Bounty Land Application that she was 67 years old. On the 1850 census she is living with Valentine BRASWELL’s daughter Mary Jane BRAZIL who was married to Thomas MERREDITH and Nancy’s age is given as 68.)

Capt Louis Dicken Wilson below was the greatgrandson of Rebecca Braswell and William Willson. (Louis D Wilson died of dysentery at Vera Cruz and is buried on the town square in Tarboro. After his death, the new county of Wilson, NC was named for him.)

One would wonder if such a large cadre of Braswell volunteers had something to do with their cousin being the recruiter.

Do you know what any of the middle names were? I am especially interested in Bryant W , Joel D, Joseph L, and Willie/Wiley C.

Rebecca was dau Richard II and Eleanor per many indirect records including one land record which gave credit to the Patent in Rebecca's name to Richard Braswell.

Which, if any of these Braswell soldiers were from the Richard-Eleanor line?

Thanks, Marilyn

Braswell, Judah and William Hunt IV

From Ann H. Kahn of Sebring, FL, published in Braswell Branches, Vol. 9, No. 3, Summer 2000:

I connect with Judah BRASWELL m. William HUNT (IV), son Alexander and daughter Nancy. William IV was s/o Henry and Agnes HUNT. My Alexander was born about 1760 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. I have proven his service in DAR.

William was married to Ann Cloe at his death. In 1790 Judah HUNT was in Granville Co., North Carolina; William IV and children were counted in Robeson Co., North Carolina."

From Nona: My Lucreasy BRASWELL was probably born ca. 1750 (she married William WILLIAMS ca. 1778) and Lucreasy had a sister named Judah who was probably born by 1760 and was married to a Mr. HUNT before 1779. Judah had children Alexander and Nancy.

Following are excepts from Ann’s application for membership in the National Society of Colonial Dames, user with her permission.

Dempsey HUNT, son of Alexander HUNT was born about 1760 Nash Co., North Carolina; died at Moore Co., North Carolina before 1830.
